From expert systems to machine learning to artificial intelligence: the main technologies to support digital transformation in the company.
The so-called ” expert systems ” are software capable of replicating the performance of an expert in a specific field of activity (called “domain”), managing to deduce information ( output ) from a set of starting data ( input ).
Put simply, an expert system helps find the optimal solution to a specific problem without human intervention. It should be emphasized that the expert system can also process incomplete data, using the so-called fuzzy logic (an “approximate” reasoning that leads to highly probable results) to work on qualitative rather than quantitative inputs.
Due to these characteristics, expert systems are used in all problem solving processes , carrying out actions such as interpretation , diagnosis or forecast-based planning .
For example, OCR is an expert system that recognizes the text present in an image and transforms it into an editable computer document starting from a programmed conversion model.
If we combine the expert system with a technology to support information processing, then we are talking about machine learning : algorithms that use mathematical-computational methods to learn information directly from data , without the need to be programmed to perform that type of task. Machine learning algorithms improve themselves over time through an adaptive mechanism: the greater the number of cases processed by the algorithm, the more precise and accurate its interpretative answers will be, with a significant reduction in the weight of errors in the conclusion of each learning process.
Machine learning algorithms are what allow artificial intelligence to become “proficient” in a certain task or action.
We speak of artificial intelligence when a technological system is able to solve problems or perform tasks and activities typical of the human mind and ability .
The applications of artificial intelligence are now very numerous and there are just as many potentialities not yet exploited. In many companies, the process of implementing artificial intelligence enabling technologies has already begun as part of digital transformation initiatives . In fact, organizations have increasing amounts of data available and can exploit artificial intelligence to process them and optimize certain processes, such as:
- offer customers a more personalized and responsive shopping experience;
- carry out faster and more efficient checks on internal activities;
- predict future market trends and make smart decisions.
